Year 2

Year 2 is an exciting time in your child’s life. They are role models for the rest of KS1 and face new challenges to equip them for KS2 and beyond. The children have settled in very well this year and adapted positively to the demands of the new curriculum! The curriculum builds on the existing skills from Foundation and Year 1 as well as introducing many new concepts and strategies to learning. The journey that I, as your child’s teacher, you as the parent/caregiver and most importantly your child share in Year 2 is of collaboration. I am looking forward to working together with you. At the end of Year 2, your child will take part in a Government required assessment and as we come closer to the time information and support resources will be given.

Welcome back to the Spring term! The children have been excited coming back from their winter break and eager to share their stories. It has been wonderful to see the children so engaged from the very first day. The curriculum builds on the existing skills from Foundation and Year 1 as well as introducing many new concepts and strategies to learning that will progress your child through to Year 6 and beyond. The journey that I, as your child’s teacher, you as the parent/caregiver and most importantly your child share in Year 2 is of collaboration. Your support last term was amazing and I hope it continues this term. At the end of Year 2, your child will take part in a Government required assessment and as we come closer to the time information and support resources will be given.

PE

Year 2’s PE will be on a Tuesday and Wednesday this half term, with the focus given to gymnastics and fitness. Please make sure your child has the correct indoor and outdoor kit and that all items are clearly labelled.

Reading

To develop a love of learning and especially in reading children will be exposed to a wide variety of genres. As many of the children entering Year 2 are fluent readers the focus moves to building comprehension and inference skills. We share a class book so that children are read to at school and develop a love of books. I would encourage you to share your love of books and spend time story-telling together.

Phonics and spellings

In Year 2, we will continue to focus on establishing fluency in reading and children will build upon their phonic knowledge. They will also learn to accurately read, write and apply common expectation words and high frequency words in their work.
