Year 2 is an exciting time in your child’s life. They are role models for the rest of KS1 and face new challenges to equip them for KS2 and beyond. The children have settled in very well this year and adapted positively to the demands of the new curriculum! The curriculum builds on the existing skills from Foundation and Year 1 as well as introducing many new concepts and strategies to learning.
It has been wonderful to see the children so engaged from the very first day back and I am excited to continue their journey with them in KS1. At the end of Year 2, your child will take part in a Government required assessment and as we come closer to the time information and support resources will be given.
Year 2’s PE will be on a Monday this half term, with the focus given to multisports. Please make sure your child arrives to school in their PE kit.
To develop a love of learning and especially in reading children will be exposed to a wide variety of genres. As many of the children entering Year 2 are fluent readers the focus moves to building comprehension and inference skills. We share a class book so that children are read to at school and develop a love of books. I would encourage you to share your love of books and spend time story-telling together.
Phonics and spellings
In Year 2, we will continue to focus on establishing fluency in reading and children will build upon their phonic knowledge. They will also learn to accurately read, write and apply common expectation words and high frequency words in their work.
The following home learning tasks will be useful if you need to self-isolate as a family. Your child can work through these tasks over the coming weeks. If your child has an interest in a particular area, or wishes to take one of the projects in a different direction, we would love to see it at school when they return.
