Welcome to Year 1!
The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that the children have had in Reception. We have a variety of areas of continuous provision that children can access when they are not completing their guided group learning. Continuous provision can enable children to explore learning, practice new skills and follow their own interests.
We often enhance the provision areas to make links to adult led learning. This ensures that children have plenty of opportunities to practice and improve skills, knowledge and confidence in active, independent learning. We have shared some examples below to give some idea of the activities in the provision areas. Please click on the photos to see more.
We encourage children to read (and be read to) at home as much as possible. Reading with your child at least 4 times per week is really important in order to develop their fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. If you need any help supporting your child, please come and talk to us.
In Year 1, children have a daily 30 minute phonics session. In June, the children will take part in the annual Phonics Screening Check. This is a short, statutory check for all Year 1 pupils. They will do this 1:1 with their teacher and read a variety of real and 'alien' words to test their decoding skills. As we get nearer to the time of this screening check, you will receive plenty of practice resources. The following home learning tasks will be useful if you need to self-isolate as a family. Your child can work through these tasks over the coming weeks. If your child has an interest in a particular area, or wishes to take one of the projects in a different direction, we would love to see it at school when they return.
