Welcome to Year 1!
The Year 1 team would like to congratulate the children on making such a smooth transition from Reception to Year 1. The children have settled into their class and new routines very well and we are so pleased to see their enthusiasm for learning and their kind and helpful attitudes.
The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that the children have had in Reception. We have a variety of areas of continuous provision that children can access when they are not completing their guided group learning. These enable children to develop independent learning and social skills as well as creativity.
Thank you for your continued support from home. We are really looking forward to the year ahead and all the super learning which will be taking place.
Year 1’s PE will be on a Wednesday and Thursday this half term. Please make sure your child has the correct indoor and outdoor kit and that all items are clearly labelled.
Reading and spellings
We encourage children to read (and be read to) at home as much as possible. Reading with your child at least 4 times per week is really important in order to develop their fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Each week there will be a list of spellings for children to practice inside their reading diary which are based on words they have been introduced to in phonics. If you need any help supporting your child, please come and talk to us.
In Year 1, children have a daily 30 minute phonics session. In June, the children will take part in the annual Phonics Screening Check. This is a short, statutory check for all Year 1 pupils. They will do this 1:1 with their teacher and read a variety of real and 'alien' words to test their decoding skills. As we get nearer to the time of this screening check, you will receive plenty of practice resources. There are a variety of free phonics activities to support your child’s learning in phonics available here: https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/freeIndex.htm
